As MSNBC cut between New York and Chicago and Kenya and Atlanta last night following the 11:00 p.m. official call for Obama, was I the only one thinking of the montage of victory celebrations at the end of Return of the Jedi? At the risk of stretching analogies between the Bush administration and the Galactic Empire, there was a definite sense of relief-from-tyranny celebrating going on last night. People were literally partying in the streets in cities around the world. When was the last presidential election that resulted in global spontaneous street parties? We’re in the midst of something special here.
Last night after Obama’s victory speech, SR Wild tweeted: There are a few hundred people on Church St. chanting “Obama” and “USA”
Burlington, Vermont. People didn’t take to the streets when Clinton won in 1992. Maybe in Little Rock they did, but not in Burlington. This is huge.

Yes, Bill, you WERE the only one thinking of Return of the Jedi.
But I appreciate the analogy. Greatly. Because I feel like the weight of the Empire has been lifted off my chest.
However, somehow I don’t see a glowing, non-corporeal W walking up to join Lincoln and MLK as they look on approvingly.
Gregory for Obama!
Swell analogy.
Now the real work towards progress begins. An Obama administration is brimming with promise. But all enthusiasm must be tempered with a promise of our own: accountability, as we transition from opposition to thoughtful offense.
