Prepping for my long voyage

Posted on Jul 14, 2009 by billsimmon in Life of Bill, linkdump | 4 Comments

I’m leaving for Portland, Oregon tomorrow for a week and I’m clearing stuff off my plate and getting things together for the trip. You can stay up to date on all the goings on in PDX here at Candleblog and in my Facebook and Twitter feeds and you can follow all the hot community media action at the Alliance for Community Media national conference by paying attention to the tag “acmedia09.” I’ll be bringing video and still cameras so there should be some stuff to look at, time and broadband permitting.

Let’s clear out some of these tabs now…

  • The interns at the Burlington Free Press have apparently started a Gawker-style snark-blog called Camp BFP. (Looks good, guys, but in the appeal to “FOLLOW US DUDE!” there really ought to be a comma between “US” and “DUDE,” FWIW.)
  • Neurocinematics is an academic field studying the effects that movies have on our brains. Perhaps this will somehow eventually explain the bizarre popularity of Michael Bay’s “films.”
  • Was the series finale of BSG the worst sci-fi ending ever put on screen? Brad Templeton’s thorough and thoughtful essay on the question suggests the answer is yes.
  • Tornado vs. train. Guess which one wins.
  • This crazy-amazing software takes crappy hand held shaky-cam footage and renders it as a perfectly steady dolly and track shot (I mentioned this at yesterday’s New Media Office Hours).
  • My friend Jeff is making a documentary about a proto-punk band from Detroit/Vermont called Death. Read more about it here and watch the trailer here.

Don’t miss Jake’s, or Powell’s Books, the greatest Old Media store there is.

I love Powell’s! I’m not a huge seafood fan though, but I know PDX has plenty of culinary charms to offer.
