I was thinking I needed to get a new receiver myself until I figured this out. Now my PS3 is hooked to the receiver w/optical and to the TV with HDMI, and all is well! Dunno if it will save you any effort or expense, but FYI… if you have an optical input on your receiver, you don’t need to upgrade to an HDMI-capable one to get high-quality digital audio.
