Sorry I won't be there. Have fun at Metronome. Speaking of which, I ran into Anne Rothwell at Washington Square this afternoon! She was the first owner of Metronome. She saw me and came over to say hi. She's so great. I was on a date, so I couldn't really spend as much time with her as I would have liked. I used to know Todd, the owner of Border, which was the club before Metronome. Y'follow?

I missed the Decemberists in NYC last Monday. Instead went to a lecture, at the New School, about the road and it's influence on art, featuring photographer Stephen Shore, artist John Baldassari, and Robert Benton, co-writer of Bonnie & Clyde. It was intereseting and pretty neat 'cuz I sat about ten feet away from them.

I learned something neat about Stephen Shore.

His book, Uncommon Places has been re-issued. I really love his work. Definitely an influence on all my work. In all that 8x10 formality, color and structure is a certain beauty, grace and unbridled AMERICA in his photos that he made during his trips across this great land in the early to mid '70's. Seeing them now, as when I first saw them in the '80's, evokes a certain nostalgia and longing, much like the work of Edward Hopper.

He told us about how, before he went 'cross country, he made a bunch of photos and had them made into post cards. 65,000 postcards. He never sold any. Zip, zero, nada.

So, as part of his journal of everything he did (cue slide of paper with recipts taped to it and the date stamped in the uper left corner), including saving every scrap of paper that came his way, receipts, credit card slips for gas, logging what he watched each night (while loading film holders) and ate each day, he's logging "Post Card Dsitribution".

While he's making these really very staid photographs, he is also visiting stores and loading up their postcard racks with his postcards. How antic/funny/subversive is that? That made me love him even more. So here you have this control freak, making controlled photographs and then he's doing something very uncontrolled, putting his postcards on someone else's racks! He would check them the following year and note that one or two, or a few had been sold. Very funny.

It doesn't really mater what the panel is about. Just talk about semiotics and dialectics and you're golden.

Be sure that you're wearing a black beret, or some really old beat up, funky hat. For the panel, lose the ballcap, too, everyday/jock.

I would be surprised, Mark, if anyone thinks I'm a jock because of my Science Fiction Museum ballcap. Berets are for poseurs--ballcaps are for filmmakers.
