New Year's Day Moviethon

life of billBack in the early 90s I spent a long, lazy New Year's Day with some friends watching movies... a lot of movies. Thus began my annual holiday tradition (one of my many annual holiday traditions) of watching movies all day on January 1st. I do my best to make sure all of the movies are in hand the night before as well as any food or beverages that I might need so I don't have to leave the house for any reason. I can just sort of lull out of bed and click my remote and go.

Sometimes there is a theme (like the all 1982 sci fi theme from a few years back), but usually I just go to the video store, look at every single movie there, and choose between 6 and 10 films.

This year was easy. On New Year's Day I will watch all three Lord of the Rings Special Edition DVDs in a row. I just looked up the running times (they are not printed anywhere on the disks themselves) and I'm staring down the maw of about 11.5 hours of LOTR:

  • Fellowship of the Ring: 208 min. (3:28)
  • The Two Towers: 223 min. (3:43)
  • Return of the King: 251 min. (4:11)
  • I can't wait.
