Being an artist I am all for free speech. The jerseys are licsenced by the NFL, so they are protecting their brand, which I think is legitimate, up to a point. Having said that, their terminology and filtering leaves a lot to be desired. Words that are slightly more sophisticated than potty humor pass right through and are passed by the filter.
Having an actual human look at the order after it's been flagged might be a better way. Then they send an email saying that the word is not acceptable or something to that effect. They want it automated, so there are going to be problems. If they really want to protect their brand, they should work a little harder and assign a few people on that task, like the consultant told them. I can see both side of the argument, hmmm. The NFL limiting what is put on a shirt that you are paying them for. Ultimately it's your shirt, not the NFL's. But they want control beyond the transaction. Then there's the whole "what is naughty[sic]?" argument... 1,121 words you can't put on an NFL jersey

I didn't link to the site to complain that the NFL is stomping out free speech (don't let the topic icon confuse you). I just think it's a funny list.
Once Spine and I were at Disney World in Florida and we wanted to buy mouse ears. The lady at the kiosk wouldn't embroider "Spineboy" on the hat. When we asked why she said she wanted to protect Disney's image of something. I'm sure there was no master list of no-no words that included "Spineboy," she was just using her noggin and figured it was probably something dirty or mean (it was neither). We were disapointed and felt a little indignant from having been oppressed by The Man. Then we got ice cream and felt better. 1,121 words you can't put on an NFL jersey

Oh. But it is an interesting argument. I think it's funny the word "DEPOSIT" is "naughty".
