I'm back from 10 days of bug bites, beer, boats, birds, and bliss in Panama. I was planning to blog from down there, but I forgot the USB cable for my camera, and in any case I was distracted by more pressing concerns, such as napping and grappling with watermelon-sized papayas. One pic below, with more to come later.

Wow. That spider looks BIG. Today at work I was waiting for my copies and I saw something directly in front of my face about a half an inch from my nose. Once I was able to focus in on it, I realized it was a spider that was spinning its way down to the floor from the ceiling. Between your picture and my story, I hope Bill and Emily can sleep.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I'm sure there's some Van Halen joke in there somewhere, but I'm too lazy to make one up. Welcome back from Panama!

Ah... Banana Spider. These also live near my brother's house in Florida. They get really big but are harmless. Still, my spider phobia makes me shiver just looking at that photograph.

Great Photos! Due to my general trailer-trash nature, Panama is completely invisible to me. I never encounter pictures in the news and I unless I was to google it, wouldn't know a damn thing about it. As embarassing as this is to admit, I know as much about Panama as I do about the Republic of Maldives. I must say these pictures were kind of surprising, although I can't really say why.
I can say that my first question was "what the fuck was Spine doing in Panama? Some kind of missionary work?". Crap, I gotta get some book learnin'. Noriega must be homesick

DanZ, you're not the only one to wonder why the hell I went to Panama. As a travel destination, it's pretty obscure. But that's changing. Panama has a stable democracy now, it took control of the canal from the U.S. five years ago (a huge source of national pride, not to mention revenue), and it's figured out that it has all the same natural beauty and profusion of wildlife that its neighbor Costa Rica offers. So tourism is on the rise.
Also, a lot of ex-pats, especially American ones, are retiring in Panama or living there for part of the year. My mom has a place there. But after this most recent visit (my third), I'm curious to explore the rest of the country. My visits so far have been limited to Panama City (huge and surprisingly modern, with fascinating ruins and other glimpses of the past) and Bocas del Toro (a laid-back island province where I spent most of my time visiting my mom). Next time I want to rent or buy a motorcyle and explore the interior of the country and all the indigenous areas therein. Panama's only the size of South Carolina, so it shouldn't take too long. The population is a mix of black, indigenous, Mestizo, and white, with many shades in between. The kids in the photo I posted live on an island called Bastimentos, and they are all most likely the descendants of Jamaican and other Caribbean blacks who immigrated to Bocas del Toro in the late 1800s to work on the United Fruit Company's (now Chiquita) banana plantations. Those plantations moved inland long ago. In conclusion, I heart Panama. More pictures later. |
