This image shows comet Tempel 1 six minutes before it ran over NASA's Deep Impact probe at 10:52 a.m. Pacific time, July 3 (1:52 a.m. Eastern time, July 4). The picture was taken by the probe's impactor targeting sensor.

I feel sorry for all the Whos in Whoville whom we killed with our interplanetary washing machine.

Not quite as ambitious as ESA's Rosetta project, eh? I hope NASA's deep space unmanned missions aren't being slimmed down in anticipation of a jumbo manned mission. We'll be bogged down trying to walk around on Mars while some European probe is discovering life on Europa or something...

So what happened to the comet? Did I miss that important information in the article?
Also, doesn't it sound like this "deep impact" mission or whatever is a front to go blow up a comet that was heading straight for Earth? Am I paranoid? Have I been watching too much Armageddon? Hello Tempel I, Goodbye Impactor!

The engineers at JPL just wanted to blow something up, so they steered it into the onrushing comet. Happy Fourth!

I certainly hope comet Tempel 1 was not heading straight for earth becase the probe's impact had about as much influence on the comet's trajectory as a mosquito has on your car's trajectory when it collides with your widsheild on I89. That is to say, the effect was very small.

And maybe it's just me, but I think the mosquito explosion looks a lot cooler.

the argument "ruins the natural balance of forces in the universe" is hilarious in so many ways. I have a feeling this won't go very far.
