What I Did On My Summer Vacation

life of billThe long weekend was nice but this afternoon's thunderstorm was a rumbling metaphor for my returning workload--it never rains, it pours.

My regular work schedule resumes today, made heavier by the absence of several VCAM staffers this month who are away for their various vacations and conferences.

Also, today I began teaching middle schoolers in Hinesburg how to shoot and edit video in a summer workshop class called "Lights, Camera, Action."

I'm writing an article for Business People Vermont this month. "Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in!"

And in VCAM board news, we're dealing with some extreme content issues again. This time one of our more notorious producers is running hardcore porn on his show. The show is on during our "adult content" block and VCAM has no specific policy beyond putting on "adult" stuff late at night. The question before us is: if hardcore porn is actually unprotected speech (i.e., illegal to cablecast--and it's not at all certain that this is the case), then will VCAM be held responsible for airing it or, as conventional public access wisdom suggests, is the producer alone responsible for the content? If the answer is the latter, then our policies as they stand are sufficient--if the former, then we need to figure some stuff out. So we're meeting tonight to begin the discussion about this but a lot remains to be discovered about the actual legal issues involved. It's actually kind of amazing that no one has pushed this particular envelope here before. It's about time we had to deal with the question.

Yay! Summer is fun!

Oh yes, and please go vote for the Best Vermont Blog in the Seven Daisies contest. A little bird told me that Candleblog is "in the running" so if you haven't voted yet, go do it now! The Best Vermont Blog category is about halfway down the list. Do it!!!

UPDATE: Do'h! The deadline for voting was Tuesday, so you can't do it anymore. I hope you all voted your conscience and were not swayed by promises of cash or sexual favors. Keep your collective Candleblog fingers crossed.
