movies this week

life of billNot much going on around here today so Here's a rundown of the films I've watched this week:

Me and You and Everyone We Know: This is at the Roxy and it's one of the best films I've seen all year. Miranda July manages to blend quirky and artsy, disturbing and hilarious, profound and goofy all together in one charming package. Go see this one quick before it's gone.

The Girl From Monday: Hal Hartley is perhaps the most influential of all of my favorite directors on my own sensibilities as a filmmaker. Unfortunately, his last couple of films have been real missteps. This film is "a science fiction" according to the opening credits but HH does little new with the genre--in fact, the SF elements are hackneyed and poorly thought through. It's unclear if he's making a statement about society and the human condition using SF elements, or if he's making a statement about the use of SF elements in film or what. The Girl From Monday is muddy, unoriginal, and not very entertaining.

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion: Emily grabbed this with the TiVo because she hadn't seen it in a while and I'd never seen it before. Great fun. Mira Sorvino's accent is fantastic. Nothing life-altering here, but several guffaws worth of light entertainment. I'm glad I finally saw it.

Once Upon a Time in the West: Sergio Leone's best spaghetti western was written by Leone, Dario Argento and Bernardo Bertolluci--three of the most important Italian filmmakers since the neorealists. It features an amazing turn by Henry Fonda as the coldly evil Frank. Some of the classic lines include...

BRONSON: You bring a horse for me?
3 BAD GUYS (looking back at 3 horses): Looks like we're one short.
BRONSON: Nope. You brought two too many.

MORTON: Damnit Frank! I told you to scare 'em, not kill 'em!
FRANK: People scare better when they're dyin'.

Great film.
