We dropped off a few bags of food on the
Statehouse lawn at noon. Dog/Cat food, beans, peanut butter, etc. It was kind of weird in that the task was so mundane. Then we drove to the Statehouse. The city had disabled all the parking meters. We got out, walked towards the park and then suddenly it all happened: I saw the semi being loaded w/ a forklift and I started to get choked up. People were streaming in, dropping off bags of food, clothing, etc. We packed our own food into boxes and walked away and I kept thinking about the people I've seen on TV - the disenfranchised, the hungry and hot.... The woman sobbed into the camera: "Don't think 'black', don't think 'poor', think 'trapped' ... think 'desperate'!"
There was just something about seeing that semi being loaded that did it. I'm still haunted. As we walked away, we walked into the stream of people coming in toward the truck carrying food, paper towels, a toy radio, diapers... one guy had two gallons jugs of water in each hand. Two gallons of water. And he was grinning from ear to ear.
