I'm sure it's true that women at the authorial level of the comics biz, like female lead guitarists, are greatly outnumbered by men, but I take issue with that title. Admittedly, the magazine probably meant "great" in the sense of "successful" or "canonized." But I'm thinking about my own love affair around 1989-91 with the R. Crumb compilation series Weirdo, and I remember that many of the artists I liked best were women. Carol Lay, Penny Moran, Julie Doucet, and the amazing Phoebe Gloeckner (who now has a blog, of course) come to mind. I'm sure there were others, too.
