Some Candleblog readers may have noticed the block in the right sidebar that contains a list of "fun words to say in a Vermont accent." If you've ever lived in Vermont, you probably think this list is hilarious. If you haven't, you'll be confused by the seemingly random assortment of mostly ordinary English words. The Vermont accent is completely unique and utterly fantastic. It's not as charming as the Minnesota accent that Fargo made so popular, but it's every bit as specific and unmistakable and nobody from outside the state is familiar with it. The rural "woodchuck" version of the accent that Rusty DeWees' The Logger speaks is much less common than the more mundane, urbanized flavor that Jessica boasts in the following clip.
Neil Cleary sent me this, urging me to include "crotch rocket" on the Vermont accent list (done). He got it from Jason Schoolbus. It was apparently recorded in 2001 off of a scanner picking up a cell phone or cordless phone transmission and it's one of the best things ever. It's several minutes long and you must listen to it all. Find a place where you won't be interrupted and revel in the delicious voyeuristic pleasure of Jessica and poor, poor Matt (3.3 MB mp3).
