At some point back in the mid nineties I started a tradition of spending New Years Day watching movies -- all day. Beginning from the time I wake up until I'm too tired to continue on January 1st, it's nothing but movies. In recent years the tradition has morphed into being thematic. A couple of years ago we watched the
Godfather films and some other Italian-American fare and Emily cooked up a big
timpano, ala
Big Night. We also watched
all 11.5 hours of the LotR Special Edition disks one year and we made a shepherd's pie, which seemed to us to be very Hobbitish in nature, and so thematic as well. This year we had talked about watching nothing but submarine movies --
Das Boot, Run Silent Run Deep, Grey Lady Down, Hunt for Red October, etc. When and if we do that we'll order some giant submarine sandwiches for lunch.
Instead of sub movies this year, we're watching all three hilarious seasons of
Arrested Development (which we recently got from Amazon for $30, thank you) and we're eating food that we enjoyed when we were much younger -- get it? "Arrested Development." Heh. So we'll have fruit roll-ups and PB&Js on Wonder Bread and juice boxes and Mountain Dew, etc. It will be a sugar rush for sure.
Any local Candleblog readers who know where we live are welcome to join us at any point during the day. We'll get rolling around 11 or so. We might even share some fruit roll-ups with you if you're not a complete spaz and if you have something decent to trade. :)
