filmmakingI just received this from the folks at SXSW...

Dear Bill,

This is never easy news to deliver, and we appreciate your time. Unfortunately, we did not select 'Digital Pamphleteer' for the 2008 program of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival. This year, SXSW received more submissions than ever before (over 3100), which made the selection process even more competitive. We assure you that your submission was given full consideration, and we thank you for considering SXSW when you decided on festivals in which to submit.

We hope that you continue to submit your work to SXSW, and hope to see you at the festival, either in 2008 or beyond. If you’d like information on attending SXSW 2008 (and a coupon to redeem the discounted badge rate), please contact us at film@sxsw.com.

It should be said again, we apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to the opportunity to showcase your work in the future. Thank you for your patience during this long and difficult selection process.

All our best,

SXSW Programming Staff

As the weeks wore on, my initial optimism about getting into SXSW started to be replaced with the sinking feeling that it was not to be.  I actually don't feel all that bad about this.  I've seen the shorts programs at SXSW and I'm confident my film was good enough to make the cut, so I'm actually taking them at their word that there was just too much good stuff to program this year.  The award I received at VIFF in October helps take the edge off a bit too.  The film will also play at this year's Green Mountain Film Festival, I'm told (though I still have to mail them a disk!).  The question now is, what else do I do with the thing?  I think it's still got some legs.  Other festivals?  Cable?

At least now I feel confident about sharing the link more broadly.  Here is my Goldstone Award-winning film, Digital Pamphleteer (7 min., 44 MB, QT7 required).  It's a short documentary about political blogger (and Poli-Sc-Fi Radio co-host) Steve Benen.  A YouTube version is available here.  Enjoy...
