I have two co-workers headed down to Orlando this morning (Burlington->JFK->Orlando), destined for a 4:30pm landing. JetBlue hasn't cancelled the flights to Orlando yet (the tornado watch expires at noon and the tropical storm watch expires at 4pm). Florida is going to get hammered, but only for a short time. Take a look at this wind swath from the National Hurricane Center and take a REALLY good look at Cuba. Those poor people are sitting at Wilma's pivot point and have been hammered since Wilma was a mere tropical storm.

Damn, I hope your brother weathers the storm alright. A parent at
Elah's school was supposed to meet up wth a friend from Naples and
canoe the Everglades but I think that plan will have to be delayed.

My best friend Francis is in West Palm Beach and is without power, but he has some battery powered lights and things like that.

I talked with him this morning and the windows were rattling something fierce and he backed away frm the windows. We talked again at 19:30 hrs and he is doing fine, but he has no way of finding out what happened.

He said that I was the only one of about a dozen people who called, to actually get through and talk. At first we were shouting to eachother over the phone, but the signal improved during the course of the conversation.

Ever the journalist, Francis drove around a bit and the grocery store parking lot was under water and some of the bushes in his garden were ripped away and missing.

During Katrina, Frank moved his car and then not long after, a tree fell down and landed in the spot where his car had been parked, just hours before.

We had to cut the call short, so that he could conserve battery power on his phone, but we'll talk again tomorrow.

I've been gazing into my crystal ball, and I'd like to make a prediction here on Candleblog.

Within the next decade we will see two major hurricanes (Cat 3 or better) converge on the same area (hurricane force winds and storm surge will affect the same geographic area) at the same time.
