We're lousy with surge protectors and UPSes and we still got fried by a direct hit last summer.  We sit under a big smoke stack that is prone to lightening strikes. It's not our electric that gets fried, it's our network.  The current follows the cat 5 cables and kills computers -- even when they're sitting there off.
